About Relay for Life

Relay For Life is a family festival celebrating the power of community fundraising in the fight to beat cancer. Teams of friends and family fundraise for life-saving research then unite at a weekend-long festival to honour everyone who has been affected by cancer and celebrate the progress made in research.

The festival is focused around a 24-hour relay where team members take it in turns to walk around a track to show that together we’ll do whatever it takes to beat cancer.

About the Role

Each Relay is led by a committed group of volunteers – these volunteer leaders are the backbone of the whole experience. They work all year round supporting each team’s fundraising and creating an unforgettable Relay festival.

We’re looking for volunteers who can help us beat cancer by giving their time and skills to help engage their community with Relay For Life and lead a brand-new community hub in South East.

Where will the role be located?

We are looking for Leaders in the South East of England in postcode areas beginning with the following:

KT, CR, BR, DA, TW, SW, SE, SL, ME, CT, TN, BN, RH, GU.

 What will you be doing?

As a Community Hub Leader, we need your passion and skills to unite your community in the fight against cancer. We’re looking for committed people who will represent Cancer Research UK in their local area, are passionate about beating cancer, can inspire and motivate others to fundraise and know who’s who in the area.

A Community Hub leader will:

  • Be an ambassador for Cancer Research UK in the community, engaging individuals, businesses and local networks with the work of the charity and the impact that they can have to help us beat cancer.
  • Recruit teams from the local community and inspire those teams to raise as much as possible in the lead up to the Relay weekend
  • Build strong relationships with the Team Captains and Team Members to encourage year-on-year participation
  • Encourage cancer survivors and their family and friends to join the Relay, by entering teams or to take part in the celebrations at the Relay For Life weekend event. Survivors of cancer are our special guests at Relay For Life and your role is vital to ensure those in your community are included by sending invitations, including them in activities and arranging opportunities for survivors to meet throughout the year
  • A poignant part of the Relay is the Candle of Hope Ceremony, when the Relay stops to come together to celebrate and remember loved ones. Your role will involve promoting the ceremony within the community as a way for people to engage with Relay, You’ll also distribute candle bags and seek out opportunities in the community such as asking local schools to take and decorate candle bags for the display.
  • ‘Spread the word’. Help to raise awareness of cancer prevention, early diagnosis and the impact of our work. Awareness of cancer is a major part of what we do at Cancer Research UK. With the support of the central team a Hub Leader will use creative ways to promote awareness within the teams and wider community by planning and coordinating fun and engaging activities
  • Liaise with the Central Organising Committee and cascade information about the Relay weekend to your teams
  • Co-ordinate your Hub’s participation at the Relay weekend event

The type of person we are looking for:

Are you a natural leader and team player with good communication skills, well networked with a local knowledge of your community? Do you love to socialise and meet people from all different backgrounds? We’re looking for organised, self-motivated people who have the ability to delegate and a genuine passion and enthusiasm for fundraising and the work of Cancer Research UK.

What you can expect from Cancer Research UK:

  • An induction and ongoing support and guidance from your Local Fundraising Manager as well as fellow volunteers
  • Support and guidance from the Central Organising Committee, who are responsible for organising and delivering the Relay Weekend event
  • Advice on how to set up and promote a variety of fundraising events
  • Wider support via the Relay For Life network across the rest of the UK
  • We will reimburse agreed out of pocket expenses

What benefits can you get from this role?

  • Meet like-minded people who are working together to raise money for Cancer Research UK
  • Know you are helping Cancer Research UK bring forward the day when all cancers are cured
  • Be part of a huge, fun and inspiring event
  • Development and support on your event management and leadership skills

How much time do you need to commit?

The time commitment will vary from week to week, for example it’s likely to be around 10-15 hours a week but will increase the close to the event, to get the most from this exciting challenge we are asking you to commit for at least one 12-month season and see through the first event. You will need to be available to attend the Relay weekend event.
