Slugs Count Volunteer

RHS Garden Wisley, Woking, Surrey

Our Science Team is based in the purpose-built RHS Hilltop – The Home of Garden Science, located within the beautiful setting of RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey. Currently, is has two exciting volunteer opportunities to join the Plant Health Team to support our scientific research, one of which doesn’t need any prior experience.

We have just concluded a one-year study of slugs in gardens with Newcastle University, which involved citizen scientists surveying their gardens and sending slugs for identification to RHS Garden Wisley. Volunteers are needed to assist with data entry and processing the slugs received for further scientific work. You will be working directly with staff from the Plant Health Team at Wisley at the new laboratory in RHS Hilltop.

Applicants should have an interest in slug identification, working with scientific collections, enjoy working in a lab setting and have good computer skills and attention to detail.

This volunteering opportunity is available on Thursday or Friday. We ask our Slugs Count volunteers to commit to one day a week (or on a fortnightly basis if the position is shared) from 10am to 4pm with an hour for lunch.

To apply, complete an online application form, even if you have volunteered with us before. Please note this link will take you through to our Volunteer Portal where, if you have not already done so, you will be prompted to create a log in before progressing to the application form. If you have used this system before, please use your existing log in details.

Please ensure that you describe in your application how your skills and experience are relevant to the role you are applying for (as specified in the role descriptions) as this is how we shortlist applications.

Informal discussions with short-listed applicants will take place on 3 and 4 February 2022.

We are committed to being an inclusive recruiter and welcome applicants from all backgrounds. We would particularly welcome applicants who are aged 18-25 years as we are underrepresented in this age group. We are also committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk and expect all volunteers to share this commitment.

The closing date for all applications is Sunday 23 January 2022.
