This is an exciting opportunity to lead the Board of Trustees of the Trinity Fields Trust and guide the charity through its next phase of strategic development and growth.

We also welcome new Trustees to our Board and are particularly interested in people with a good understanding of the charity sector, community engagement, social deprivation and poverty, fundraising and related areas of knowledge and expertise. We would also welcome people who have strategic experience in property development or any related fields, and in PR and communication.

Our Current Board Chair, Virginia Priest, is stepping down having successfully overseen a period of unprecedented change in the ownership and operations of the fields. We seek a new Chair who can guide the Charity in the development of a revised strategy, encompassing the work already done to support it coupled with their own ideas and thoughts.

Overall purpose of the role

The Chair and General Manager in a voluntary organisation are the top team who need to have a shared vision and shared objectives. The Chair provides strategic direction, guidance and support to the General Manager, who is responsible for advising the Board and for the day-to-day running of the organisation.

  • Provide purposeful leadership and strategic direction
  • Be a constructive partner to the General Manager
  • Develop a highly effective Board team
  • Facilitate and sustain good governance
  • Influence and collaborate with stakeholders

The successful candidate will ideally be somebody who has some or all the following criteria around experience, professional expertise and qualities:

  • Charity Board experience with a good understanding of charity governance and social purpose underpinning organisational strategy
  • Long-term experience in a senior role involving strategy development and implementation and people management (welcome candidates from all sectors),
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to represent the organisation with assurance and gravitas,
  • Strong interpersonal skills (tactful, diplomatic, persuasive and fair) to facilitate honest and open discussion and handle contentious issues
  • Personally motivated to make a positive difference to the underprivileged local communities of Wandsworth and Lambeth
  • Ability to engage and collaborate effectively with people at all levels, from different backgrounds and organisations
  • Ability to commit time to conduct the role well
  • Broad understanding of charity finance, policy and legislation
  • Strong connections within the Wandsworth and Lambeth community
  • Knowledge/experience of engaging deprived communities in sports and other community activities
  • Experience in the field of fundraising and grants with sports bodies
  • Good understanding of social deprivation and poverty in Wandsworth and Lambeth

Trinity Fields Trust is committed to equality of opportunity. We are keen to address the lack of diversity of our Board, to ensure that we reflect the full breadth of the people we aim to support. The Board believes that effective leadership and good decision-making is enabled through a diverse board membership, a culture of listening to, and acting on, diverse perspectives and, having board behaviours that embody respect, openness and constructive challenge.

We warmly welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates.

Time Commitment

  • Up to 6 Board meetings per year, plus one Board development/away day.
  • Additional engagements in line with the Chair’s key responsibilities.
  • Monthly meeting/call with the General Manager, plus ad hoc conversations as required.
  • Preparation of all Board meetings and prereading.

The role of Chair for the Trinity Fields Trust requires an estimated a 2-3 days per month of time. During the first few months of discovery the time commitment may be somewhat higher, particularly given the General Manager is a relatively new role, but it is expected that this will reduce when settled into the role and will fall in line with a typical time commitment of Chair for a small Charity.

Application Instructions

To express an interest in the role and to be considered, please submit the following:
• An up-to-date CV.
• A covering letter explaining how you feel you meet the criteria for the role and highlighting your knowledge of or passion for our cause.
If you wish to apply for a Trustee role rather than the Chair position, please send in your CV as well as a covering letter clearly outlining your professional experience and area of expertise and how you feel you will be able to contribute to the Board using your skills.
