Hampshire Travel for All Project

We are looking for volunteers to be part of an exciting pilot project called Travel for All, which will run in the Andover and New Forest (and Waterside) areas of Hampshire. Volunteers will support residents aged 65+ to make the most of the transport options available in their area, reducing the risk of social isolation and loneliness.

Travel for All is supported by Hampshire County Council and South Western Railway.

Key aims are to:

  • Enable older adults to identify relevant public transport options and confidently use independently.
  • Empower vulnerable adults to re-engage with their local community.
  • Reduce feelings of social isolation and loneliness and improve wellbeing.

To successfully carry out this exciting and innovative project, we need local people at the heart of this project as volunteers. Please note, you must be 18 years and over to apply.

We want volunteers to help:

  • Support older residents to identify relevant public transport options.
  • Raise the profile of local shops and town centres to boost a sense of local community.
  • Gather useful feedback from their engagement to help us identify areas for greater service promotion/development and any additional barriers preventing individuals from connecting with their communities.

What would volunteering for the Travel for All project involve?

  • Good communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to deliver a compassionate, comfortable experience to people.
  • Interest and enthusiasm for working with older adults in the community and want to make a positive difference to their lives.

Volunteers would be directly engaging with older adults and will receive bespoke training. (This is envisaged to be of a virtual nature - we will endeavour to deliver face-to-face sessions only if it is safe to do so). Activities would require some independent engagement with residents, with support and guidance from project coordinators that will support the key project aims mentioned above.

Volunteers will contact people who have been referred to the service, to arrange to meet them to help find out more about what social activities they are interested in and plan how they could get to them using public and community transport. This will involve listening to their needs, identifying what difficulties they may face in travelling and helping them find suitable routes and services.  Please note, travel expenses are not covered by this project.

You do not need previous experience within transport and travel.

Some of the benefits of volunteering include:

  • Developing and enhancing essential skills that make a positive impact on residents’ lives, improving their happiness and wellbeing by helping them to rediscover social opportunities that they would otherwise not have been able to make.
  • An opportunity to be part of a friendly and supportive virtual team.
  • Access to a comprehensive training package and ongoing support from our Project Coordinators.
Being part of this first of its kind, innovative pilot project.

We take the health and safety of our volunteers and user groups very seriously and all activities have undergone rigorous risk assessment and will be frequently reviewed in line with any changes to COVID-19 updates and potential Government restrictions. The right to volunteer in the UK can be dependent on your citizenship and UK immigration status so please make sure that you are allowed to volunteer on your visa.

Who is funding this project?

This project has been commissioned by HCC and South Western Railway (SWR). Atkins is a multinational design, engineering, and project management consultancy, that will deliver this project on behalf of HCC and SWR.

When does the project start and what are the time commitments?

We are looking for volunteers who can commit to attending initial training in November 2021, and then volunteering for a minimum of 15 hours for the initial phase of the project from mid-October - December 2021, depending on when you join the project. The project is expected to run until March 2023, however, a commitment for the full time period is not needed. We will be in touch with successful applicants to discuss availability.

Step 1: Download the application form. Please complete and return the form to  travelforall@atkinsglobal.com.

Step 2: Following a review of your application we will be in touch with the next steps that include confirming the details required to initiate an Enhanced DBS check with barred lists.

Please note that all employees of, and volunteers for this project are required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. We appreciate the value of your contributions, so for supporting this project you will receive a DBS certificate free of charge. Atkins will not pass your personal data on to third parties without your consent.

Step 3: Atkins will add volunteer details to the DDC (Due Diligence Checking). You will then be sent an email, providing log-in information and a link to an online applicant area. You will need to complete the information there. Once that is done, we will begin ID Verification. The Disclosure and Barring Service ask for 3 forms of ID.

You can check what types of ID you can use for verification here. Please let us know if you are not able to access Microsoft Teams as this is the platform we will use to verify your documents. You should receive the outcome of your DBS check within 7 days by post.
