Online Reading Volunteer
Here at Doorstep Library, we believe in the power of words to take you places. We are a not-for-profit community organisation dedicated to bringing the gift of books and the joy of reading into the homes of children and families who need our support. Our Home and Online Reading Volunteers go into homes in disadvantaged areas across London, to inspire a love of books, of stories and storytelling, and to instil a lifelong passion for reading.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 has accelerated educational inequality at an alarming rate and continues to be a growing problem, with four in every ten children in London living in households in poverty. Doorstep Library has been fighting inequality in education since 2010, introducing the magic and benefits of reading, to more than 1,600 children.
We recruit and train volunteers to go into some of the most disadvantaged areas in London to help introduce young children (0-11 years old) to the pleasure of reading. Other literacy charities get books into homes; Doorstep Library's unique home-based services means we are there in person, or online, finding the most appropriate books for every child we visit and building a relationship with the whole family. Our goal is to help each child develop the self-confidence and essential skills they need. Our tailored service enables us to help prepare children for school and broaden their opportunities in later life.
Through our long-term approach, our volunteers build trusting relationships with families, helping to connect them with the community and signposting to additional sources of local support. Whether in person, or online, we are there to support children and families who need us most.
The Online Reading Volunteer role will involve volunteering for 2 hours (4:30 pm – 6:30 pm) on a set day each week, during term time only. You will be paired with another volunteer and will aim to read with 3 families on Zoom.
The aim of these sessions will be to instil a love of reading in children. The sessions will be child-led and lots of fun for all involved!
Online reading sessions run on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons after school.
If you’re interested in finding out more about the role you will need to attend one of our Information Sessions. Register your interest and we’ll be in touch.
You must be 18 and over to apply.
