RHS Garden Wisley, Woking, Surrey

Do you like helping people and have a passion for plants and horticulture? Why not help the UK’s leading gardening charity, based in the beautiful setting of the RHS flagship garden in Surrey? RHS Garden Wisley has many varied plant collections and garden areas within the 240-acre site, attracting more than one million visitors per year.

As part of the RHS Libraries, the brand new RHS Wisley Library based in the new RHS Hilltop – The Home of Garden Science (planned to open on 24 June 2021) will encourage visitors of all ages to access our unique collections of horticultural books, journals and online databases.

After training, volunteers will help visitors to locate resources in the library collections, register library borrowers, provide information about library services, displays and events, and support our loan service, using a computerised library management system. Keeping the library in good order by shelving and tidying our stock is also an important part of the role.

A substantial part of the role will be welcoming users of all ages to the library and helping the library team to create a warm and friendly atmosphere. This may involve walking around the library, offering help where required and assisting users to find their way around both the library and the new RHS Hilltop, as well as answering or referring any queries our users may have.

Previous library experience is an advantage, and interested candidates must be comfortable in a customer service and IT-based environment. You will need to be committed to offering exceptional customer service to library visitors. An interest in horticulture and gardening is also desirable.

This role is available during the week or at weekends. We ask that weekend library volunteers give a commitment of working on a Saturday and/or Sunday once every four weeks. Weekday volunteers need to commit to assisting one day per week. A typical day is 10.45am to 4.15pm i.e. five hours volunteering, plus a half-hour for lunch and short breaks in the morning and afternoon. We do of course understand that life will sometimes get in the way but it is important that applicants think about how much time they can realistically spend with us before filling in an application.

To apply please visit our website via the link.

All applications should be received by 9pm on Sunday 25 April.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a short informal interview via Zoom from the end of April.

We are committed to being an inclusive recruiter and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds (we would particularly welcome applications from people aged 18-25 years old as we are currently under-represented from this age group). We are also committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk and expects all volunteers to share this commitment.
