Family Event Handling Collection Volunteer

What will a Family Event Handling Collection Volunteer do?

You will research and develop the Wisley handling collection. You will deliver sessions using the handling collection for visitors at events during weekends and school holidays.

What’s involved?

  • To deliver informal handling collection sessions to the public targeted at the family audience on every day during school holidays and weekends. This would be facilitated with the support of another volunteer or staff member
  • To support with the care of objects in the handling collection. Ensure all items are stored correctly and any damages to the items are recorded
  • To assist with researching a range of topics relating to the handling collection and family events. This task could be done offsite at home during the pandemic period
  • To assist with preparing resource materials which will accompany the handling collection when sessions are delivered. This task could be done offsite at home during the pandemic period.
  • Becoming familiar with, and then following, RHS Health and Safety Policy at all times, as well as any Covid-19 restrictions.
  • To be an ambassador for the RHS and the work of the Events team

Additional information:

  • We are looking for volunteers to support one day a week on a weekday and/or a weekend 09.30am to 4.30pm with a lunch break.
  • For collection care, resource materials and research mornings preparation is usually 10.00am – 2.00pm Monday to Friday term time with a lunch break
  • Handling collection sessions are usually 09.30am – 4.30pm at Hilltop or at the event location
  • To fulfil our needs in the Events team we ask for a commitment from our volunteers of two days a month
  • You will receive a Volunteer Handbook, uniform, ID, Health & Safety training, Safeguarding training and other relevant training appropriate to the activities you will be undertaking.
  • You can claim back out-of-pocket transport expenses up to a max £15 (round trip) for public transport, or a 30 mile round trip at 45p per mile per volunteering day.
  • This role is expected to be for a period of two years and then will be reviewed
