Wakefield CAPS advocates on behalf of any children and young people who are looked after by the Local Authority or subject to a Child Protection Plan (if 11+). Our aim is to ensure their views are heard and they are given information about children's rights. We support and represent them at reviews and in meetings. We can also help them when they want to make a complaint. In addition to our Advocacy work we offer an Independent Visitors Service and support various groups and forums.
We are currently recruiting volunteers to train as Independent Visitors.

About the opportunity
Independent Visitors meet regularly (ideally fortnightly) with a child or young person who is being 'looked after' by Wakefield Metropolitan District Council. The role of the Independent Visitor is to befriend, support and advise a child or young person who has little or no adult family contact. Together they can complete leisure & recreation sessions and activities of mutual interest. Expenses are covered for these sessions including mileage.

What are we looking for?
Independent Visitors should be over the age of 18.
Have the time and commitment to give to the volunteering role. (Fortnightly visits for a minimum commitment of 12 months)
You should have the ability to communicate well with children and young people.
Be a positive role model for young people.
Be able to build a supportive relationship with a young person while being mindful of professional boundaries.
You must be committed to the safety and well being of young people.
Skills such as patience, a sense of humour and sensitivity are essential.

When can you do this role?
We ask that you meet up once a fortnight the, time will be to suit the young person and the Independent Visitor - usually this is on evening or weekend.

This role would be supporting young people who are being 'looked after' by Wakefield Metropolitan District Council but who are currently living in Crewe.
