MOUNTAIN TRAINING ENGLAND IS RECRUITING FOR AN HONORARY TREASURER

Mountain Training England is seeking to recruit a non-executive director/treasurer to join its seven person board. The board consists of a mix of independent directors and directors with sector-related knowledge and experience. 

This post is non-salaried. Directors’ travel and reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

How is Mountain Training England organised?

Mountain Training England is a Company Limited by Guarantee and a registered charity. Mountain Training England consists of a Council of representatives of elected member organisations. The Members support the Board of Directors and act as a consultation body. They have the authority to elect Directors. The responsibilities of the Directors include setting the budget and organisational strategy, overseeing its implementation by the staff and running the company. The Directors are supported by an Executive Officer who in turn is supported by a staff complement.

What does Mountain Training England do?

We are the awarding body for qualifications in walking, climbing and mountaineering leadership. We also administer a personal walking skills scheme and a rock climbing skills scheme. 

Our Vision To promote a diverse and active outdoor society, supported by inspirational leaders, instructors and coaches. 

Our Mission To inspire, enable and develop people in walking, climbing and mountaineering through the provision of nationally and internationally recognised skills training and leadership qualifications. 

To achieve this Mountain Training England:

  • Administers 9 qualifications: the Indoor Climbing Assistant, the Climbing Wall Instructor, the Climbing Wall Instructor Abseil Module, the Climbing Wall Development Instructor, the Rock Climbing Instructor, the Lowland Leader Award, the Hill and Moorland Leader Award, the Expedition Skills Module, the Mountain Leader Award, and three skills training schemes, Hill Skills, Mountain Skills and Rock Skills.
  • Quality assures the delivery of our courses.
  • Provides induction and training for our course providers.
  • Regularly reviews all of our award schemes.
  • Collaborates on the global objectives of the Home Nation Boards.
  • Liaises with stakeholders and partners in order to be most effective.

What will my role be?


To attend Board and Members’ meetings and oversee the running of the business. The Directors of MTE are responsible for setting the strategy and budget, overseeing the management of the operational side of the business and ensuring the safe running of the company by implementing good governance. The specific role and responsibilities of the Treasurer are listed on the accompanying Job Description.

The ability to think strategically and creatively, to exercise independent judgement and a willingness to speak your mind are some of the key attributes we are looking for.

What level of commitment is required?

As Treasurer you will be expected to chair the Finance sub-committee, which meets quarterly. You will also be expected to attend four Directors’ meetings and three meetings of the Members per year. All meetings are face to face and all are usually held at the offices of the British Mountaineering Council in Manchester. Directors must be willing to communicate with the Board of Directors and the executive staff outside of those meetings from time to time. Directors also participate in sub-committees and special project groups such as the Nominations Committee, the Screening committee and Award Review groups. Occasional attendance at MTUK Members’ meetings is required. In practice this equates to a time commitment of between 12 - 15 days a year on average.

ROLE DESCRIPTION AND PERSON SPECIFICATION

Honorary Treasurer

The Honorary Treasurer is a key voluntary post within Mountain Training England and the wider network of related mountaineering organisations. As a member of the seven person Board of Directors the Treasurer shares the responsibility for overseeing the management of the organisation and implementing the strategic objectives of its members.

The Treasurer has a watch dog role over all aspects of financial management, working closely with other members of the Board of Directors to safeguard the organisation financially. They act as an informed reference point for the Chair and other Directors.

Although it is the Treasurer’s responsibility to ensure proper financial records and procedures are maintained, much of this work may be delegated to the Finance Sub-committee and paid staff.

Role of Mountain Training England Treasurer

 

  • The Treasurer oversees the financial matters of Mountain Training England in line with good practice and in accordance with the governing document and legal requirements of the Charities and Companies Acts and reports both quarterly to the Directors and also to the Members at three Council meetings per year about the financial health of the organisation.
  • The Treasurer ensures that effective financial measures, controls and procedures are in place.
  • The Treasurer takes the lead on the formulation of policies for finances and investments.

Specific Responsibilities

  • To oversee/verify and present budgets, accounts, management accounts and financial statements to the Directors and Members after discussion with the Finance Committee. 
  • To ensure that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.
  • To ensure that full and accurate accounts and records are kept.
  • In conjunction with the Executive Officer maintain sound financial management of MTE’s resources, ensuring expenditure is in line with the company’s objects.
  • To ensure compliance with relevant legislation e.g. Companies and Charity legislation and contractual agreements with external agencies such as funders and statutory bodies
  • To be instrumental in the development and implementation of financial, reserves and investment policies.

Specific Duties

 

  • Chairing the Finance Committee in line with its terms of reference and reporting back to the Directors.
  • Present the annual statement of accounts to the Members at the Annual General Meeting.
  • Creating, in liaison with the Executive Officer, sound financial instruments for control of MTE’s business and assets.
  • To liaise with designated staff about financial matters
  • Advising on the financial implications of MTE’s strategic and operational plan.
  • Liaising with the independent auditor to ensure that the annual accounts are compliant with the current Charities Statement of Recommended Practice.
  • Ensure any recommendations of the independent auditor are implemented
  • Contribute to the fundraising strategy of the organisation.
  • Advise on reserves policy and investment policy
  • Ensure that there is no conflict between any investment held and the aims and objects of MTE or partner organisations
  • Ensure that MTE has sufficient liquidity to meet its future commitments.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • The successful candidate will be expected to have one or more of:
    • considerable experience as a treasurer of similar sized organisations
    • or a background in accountancy
    • or experience of controlling a budget in a small-to-medium-sized (SME) organisation/business
  • Have relevant outdoor experience and have an interest in the development of the Mountain Training awards

Commitment

As Treasurer you will chair the Finance Committee, which meets quarterly. You will also be expected to attend four Directors’ meetings and three Members’ Council meetings per year. All MTE meetings are usually held in Manchester. Directors’ meetings are held on Tuesdays and Council meetings are held on Wednesdays two weeks after the Directors’ meeting. Meetings commence at 11am and close at 3pm. Occasional attendance at MTUK members’ meetings and Finance Planning Group meetings is required. MTUK members meet three times a year at the National Mountain Centres: Glenmore Lodge, Tollymore Mountain Centre and Plas y Brenin. The Finance Planning Group meets once a year at one of the MTUK members’ meetings. MTUK meetings run from 9am-1pm and Finance Planning Group meetings are held after lunch.

Term

Directors serve for a maximum of three years and are re-elected annually at the Annual General Meeting. At the end of the first three-year term of office Directors are eligible for re-election for one further term of three years. From time to time the positions of Treasurer, Vice-Chair and Chair become subject to renewal. The Directors nominate these positions from the Board and the Council votes to approve them at the AGM.

Expenses

Reasonable travel, parking and subsistence expenses are paid to Directors, in line with MTE expenses policy.
