Volunteer Befrienders Wanted
Side by Side is an exciting new Alzheimer’s Society service which helps people with dementia stay active and involved in their local community. From joining a local club, watching a film or just going for a stroll at the beach - Side by Side helps people with dementia keep doing the things they love with the support of a volunteer.
What will I be doing?
Side by Side volunteers are matched with a person with dementia and then support them to undertake activities of their choice. Activities might include a walk around the local park, a trip to the cinema, joining a new club, assisting them to pick up an old hobby or visiting local places of interest.
Where is it you want me to volunteer?
We are looking for volunteers to support people with dementia in South East Cornwall.
What skills do I need?
You will need to be patient, reliable and happy to work closely with the project staff. You do not necessarily require prior knowledge of dementia but you do need to be committed to learning about dementia and enthusiastic about helping someone with dementia improve their quality of life.
What will I gain from getting involved?
Volunteering with Side by Side is a great way to improve your knowledge and understanding of dementia, develop person centred support skills, meet new people, take part in enjoyable activities and make a real difference in someone’s life. You will receive training and on-going supervision to support you in your volunteering role and your travel and activity expenses will be reimbursed.
How much time will I need to give?
In order to promote stability for the person with dementia we ask volunteers to commit around two hours weekly or fortnightly for at least 6 months, after the relevant checks and training.
