Candlelighters provides financial, emotional and practical support to every family affected by childhood cancer in Yorkshire.

The Family Support Team provide a programme of holistic support to families affected by childhood cancer throughout Yorkshire. Including:

  • Wellbeing Services and Support
  • Specialist 1:1 Support
  • Support Groups (Mums, Dads, Siblings and Grandparents)
  • Family Events
  • Family Network (Families supporting Families)

The Family Project Support Volunteer assists the Project Support Worker to plan and deliver a series of Support Groups and Family Events throughout the year. Activities vary but include:

  • Researching and sourcing venues, suppliers, materials, refreshments, entertainment etc…
  • Liaising and negotiating with suppliers via telephone and e-mail
  • Identifying and delivering creative and innovative activities
  • Designing and creating promotional materials
  • Adding events to the website and Facebook page
  • Updating noticeboards at the hospital
  • Sending out letters and invitations
  • Assisting with the Candlelighters bus services/schedule
  • Utilising and updating electronic records and databases
  • Adhering to Candlelighters’ policies and procedures
  • Assisting the Project Support Worker with other tasks and activities as required.

We are looking for a volunteer who

  • Has experience of planning and organising events
  • Is creative, artistic and innovative
  • Is confident and has the ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with a variety of people, including suppliers, family members and supporters
  • Has excellent interpersonal and communication skills and is able to communicate professionally on the telephone, via e-mail and in person
  • Is able to manage own emotions when working with families affected by childhood cancer
  • Is experienced at delivering or teaching creative activities
  • Has strong administrative skills
  • Has strong IT skills, including the ability to use Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel
  • Has strong attention to detail
  • Is proactive, hardworking and can work independently
  • Is a good team player
  • Can climb three flights of stairs
  • Can follow Candlelighters’ policies and procedures.
