Volunteer Independent Supporter
A volunteer independent supporter provides information and support to parents of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and young people with SEND.
This rewarding role entails empowering parents and young people to express their views and wishes about education and future aspirations. Support could be at meetings with school or college, with the Local Authority or helping parents and young people to understand/complete SEN paperwork.
Volunteer applications are welcome from parents and anyone who has knowledge, experience and understanding of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and has the skills and dedication to work with parents, children and young people to help them express their views.
As a volunteer you will need empathy, the ability to build rapport, be objective and impartial, and able to write up case notes to send to the office electronically. You will be asked to support families in your own area of Kent and travel expenses will be paid. Information Advice and Support Kent provide training, on-going support and supervision.
