About Vervet Monkey Foundation

The Vervet Monkey Foundation (NPO NGO) is one of the largest primate rehabilitation centres in South Africa and the largest Vervet Monkey sanctuary in the world. The VMF is a member of Pan African Sanctuary Alliance and a GFAS verified sanctuary (Global Federations of Animal Sanctuaries) which means excellent standards are reached and the VMF is recognised globally. The VMF cares for over five hundred vervet monkeys. Most of the monkeys here arrive injured, orphaned as a result of their mothers being shot or killed or as a result of the illegal pet trade. Our goal is to restore these animals’ physical and psychological independence and rehabilitate them into troops with their own kind.

As you can imagine this process requires the help of many people with a variety of different skills. Currently our team is made up of volunteers and voluntary staff from around the world in addition to local staff. People can volunteer for periods as little as a month to 2 years. Volunteers help us with the everyday running of the foundation. Duties include daily tasks such as preparing food, changing waters, and collecting forage for the monkeys’ enrichment. Additionally, volunteers will be asked to help with general maintenance and construction projects around the foundation. Furthermore, depending on the season, longer-term volunteers could assist with the hand-raising of orphaned babies (during Dec / Jan), the foster mum integrations, behavioural observations or shadow the veterinary procedures.

Additionally, we are excited to inform you about our internship program that will cater towards students and graduates interested in animal husbandry, wildlife, medicine, behaviour, conservation, ethics and welfare. This program offers valuable hands on work experience to those wanting to work in the animal welfare industry. Additionally, interns will learn and experience many aspects from the variety of cultures living here on the foundation and will return home with a more rounded outlook on the world, as well as some useful life skills adaptable to everyday communal environments.

As a promotion to our internship program this year we are offering a 15% discount to all interns on the cost of their stay in 2015 if they quote the code VMF STUDENT 2015. This means interns will pay R8075 (£445) for one month or R51, 000 (£2815) for one year, which covers their meals and accommodation but excludes travel. The length of stay is dependent on the interns themselves, they are welcome to stay from as little as one month to as long as two years or more. (A volunteer visa is needed for those wishing to stay longer than 90 days.) Please enquire for fees for different lengths of stay.
