About Bowes Railway Co
Bowes Railway Co was designed by George Stephenson in 1826 and set up as a colliery and Standard Gauge Rope Haul Railway to transport coal to the ships at Jarrow Staithes on the River Tyne. It was opened as a museum in 1976 by the Queen mother and is currently supported by a Heritage Lottery Grant to develop the museum offer and visitor experience.
A variety of events and activities are held throughout the year, catering for families and railway/mining enthusiasts alike.
