Main Activities

  • To actively greet visitors to the Library as the first point of contact on the Welcome Desk
  • To interact with library visitors and provide information about the Library, such as opening times, exhibitions and events, resources and services, liaising with library staff as necessary 
  • To promote awareness of library resources and encourage use of the collections (e.g. by creating book displays with title reviews)
  • To assist library visitors in finding material held by the library via the library catalogue
  • To issue, discharge, renew and place holds on library books, using the library management system (Sirsi Workflows), and to re-shelve returned books
  • To record daily operating statistics and information on book use, visitor feedback, reader suggestions, and queries (Word and Excel)
  • To register new readers and researchers using the library management system, and promote the benefits of library membership
  • To sign in and out our security passes to researchers
  • To sell merchandise, manage stock rotation, and take payments of both cash and card
  • To keep the Library and exhibition area tidy, and the book shelves in good filing order throughout the day. Re-stock supplies of leaflets etc. as needed
  • To be well informed of current and forthcoming events at the Library and its immediate location (e.g. Vincent Square shows)
  • To examine new stock and current periodicals for articles of popular interest and directed topics, recording information for staff use (Excel)
  • To carry out a range of processing tasks on library books or periodicals as needed
  • To undertake such duties as may reasonably be required to ensure the smooth running of the Lending Library

Desirable Qualities and Skills

  • A polite and friendly manner and enjoy meeting and working with the public
  • The ability to listen and interpret questions accurately
  • Computer literate (MS Office); training will be given on the library management system
  • Enjoy working as part of a team
  • Confident asking questions and managing own work flow
  • An interest in horticulture and the charitable work of the RHS
  • A good level of fitness is required for shelving and moving books, and reaching upper and lower shelves
  • This position is suitable for persons aged 18 and over

Additional Terms and Information

  • We are currently recruiting for 3 volunteer roles for Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 11am – 4pm with 1 hour for lunch
  • To fulfil our needs we ask for at least a 3 month commitment from our volunteers
  • You will be given training in the tasks that you are asked to carry out, as well as a Volunteer Handbook and Health and Safety training appropriate to the activities you will be undertaking
